Three Minute Update: April 16, 2009

The “Three Minute Update” is designed to provide you with a snapshot of key items related to the department of instructional technology that may be of interest to you. Items are listed in random order. Please share all or parts of this message as appropriate.

Email Update – We have completed the migration to new servers and updated our server software to Exchange 2007.  The look and feel of the web client is a little different than the previous version, but the basic tasks remain fairly intuitive.  Any users who need assistance with the new interface should seek  it out at the building level.  If there are questions that cannot be answered, Juan Villamar and Shain Jacob are available to answer questions.

Update on Scheduled High School Wireless Upgrades – The scheduled installation of wireless access points begins next week, as the wiring for the access points is scheduled to be run next week.  After that is done, the access points will be installed and configured.  We anticipate the full job to be completed no later than May 15th.  Additionally, the recent increase in workstations at North High School’s library  has had a positive impact, and Media Specialist Josanna Jean-Louis commented, “The six workstations are up and running on the second floor of the library. They have proven their worth…providing students additional computer access during our busy instructional periods.”

CCSD Branded Google Applications and Calendars are Also a Curriculum Tool – The CCSD curriculum calendars, which were shared with elementary school principals at the most recent principals’ forum, are now ready for use by teachers and administrators in the district. Learning facilitator John Calvert will visit schools that want to begin using these calendars, and provide an introduction to this new tool and the necessary level of professional development. The curricular content that is embedded includes video, websites, curriculum maps, and more, all drawn from the district’s curriculum maps. Learning facilitators have been creating resources and populating the system with a variety of tools that support the work that takes place in the schools and in the classrooms.
